Introduction

    BPI-USA focus on the protein-based products and services. The products include over thousands of full length human genes, plant genes, pathogens, the enzymes related molecular biology, the recombinant proteins, antibodies for different purposes, etc. The services include gene synthesis and cloning, protein expression and purification, antibody generation and identification, proteomic analysis and biological microarrays. Our main goals in R&D are to define the protein biomarkers of diseases and to develop their clinical diagnostic kits.

    BPI-USA has state-of-the-art research and manufacturing facilities in six  major platform units:

   (1) Platform of recombinant proteins:  This laboratory is capable of mass cloning, expressing, and purifying recombinant proteins in different expression systems, such as bacteria, yeast, insect and mammal. Currently there are more than 5,000 human full length genes cloned into the expression vectors.  Approximately 200 clones can be generated per week.

   (2) Platform of protein purification: This laboratory is capable of separating and purifying proteins with efficient approaches, using multiple instruments such as electrophoresis systems, FPLCs, HPLCs, and image analysis systems.

   (3)  Platform of antibody generation: This laboratory is capable of generating and identifying monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. There are five cell culture laboratories with 100,000 air-clean standard grades, one animal breeding house (150 square meters) and an immuno-histochemistry laboratory. At present, it is capable to generate approximate 300 monoclonal antibodies per year.

   (4)  Platform of biological mass spectrometry: This laboratory has several mass spectrometers including ESI and MALDI as the ionization sources aimed at identifying change to sources to identify, quantitate proteins, and analyze the modification status of proteins.

   (5)  Platform of biochip: This unit undertakes generation and hybridization of biochips either for DNA chips or for protein chips, and data analysis. It has powerful automatic spotters and scanners. The rice DNA chip with 60,000 spots and the human protein chip with 5,000 spots have been produced.

   (6)  Platform of cell biology: The main functions of this unit are for cultures of primary cells and cell lines to study cell behaviors and morphologies under different treatments.

    BPI-USA has established professional teams handling business development, customer services, technical support and high level quality control system.

    BPI-USA is also undertaking many research programs funded by Department of Science and Technology and other financial agencies in China, and builds close collaborations with universities, research institutions and biotechnology companies both domestically and internationally.
